My interest in ZFS is as a HomeLab Proxmox and TrueNAS user - used for all my personal and business-related data and VMs. I work in IT, but unfortunately not as the high-level business analyst I would aspire to.

Most of my desktops and ‘servers’ are in fact upmarket 2nd/3rd gen i5/i7 laptops with quite a few ex-datacentre SSDs.

Just like upmarket used cars (I drive a large, old, very comfortable and fast upmarket estate) - they’re cheap to buy, cheap to run (not much depreciation, and mine is a diesel hybrid), very robust and plenty fast enough!

BTW if anyone reading this knows of a cheap i5+ laptop/dock combination that can connect all 6 SATA ports of its onboard iRST controller, and also has the facility to connect another 2 SATA drives natively (i.e. not USB - I use an ExpressCard dual SATA controller for the VMs’ ZFS mirror and a lowly USB-connected SATA SSD as boot drive), then please message me…

I’m a very broad IT ‘generalist’, not a deep/narrow subject-expert. I have lots of customer/client-facing onsite/telephone/remote support experience and a good ‘desk-side’ manner.

Incidentally my avatar is me in scary Halloween drag as a ‘broken doll’. If you like the look, find me on FetLife (as Truepr)
