I am a software developer primarily focused on .NET professionally, and Elixir, Ruby, and Rust for my personal projects. I first became interested in Linux around 2003, and have been “daily-driving” Linux in some capacity since about 2013. In about 2017 I racked my first colocated server, and used btrfs
which was billed as the future of Linux filesystems; after running into multiple issues with btrfs
resulting in loss-of-data, but having fallen in love with snapshots and other administrative features of CoW filesystems, I started looking into alternatives. I stumbled across the ZfsOnLinux project and have used it as my filesystem of choice since then.
Currently I maintain the following zpools for personal use:
- nagato 2x Samsung 980 Pro 1TB (NVMe)
- nagatosan 2x SanDisk Ultra 3D 1TB (SATA)
- nico 2x WD Gold 20TB (SATA)
- kaisei 2x WD Black 6TB (SATA)
2x HGST 10TB (SATA)
2x WD RE4 4TB (SATA)
- tsubaki 2x Seagate Exos 16TB (SATA)
- seraphina 2x Samsung 860 Pro 512GB (SATA)
The only data that I don’t have on ZFS, at this point, is my NTFS volumes for the Windows boxen. (Which get robocopy’d up to ZFS, where they are snapshot and replicated according to the same policies as everything else.) - All my bare-metal Linux installs are ZFS on /
, which I boot with the excellent ZFSBootMenu project. (If you have never used it I would highly suggest you check it out! I use Arch Linux, btw, so believe me when I say “it has never broken my boot process” is the highest honor I can bestow upon that project.)
