8vs16 channel HBA LSI 9300 8/16

Hi,

I currently have an LSI 9300-8i (I think). I’m thinking about changing it for a 9300-16i. However, I think I heard these are just two 9300-8i on the same board and run awfully hot. My 9300-8i already runs pretty hot so if that’s the case, I’d likely get a second 9300-8i,

What do you think?

Do you have a fan on your current card? I bought a small Noctua 40mm that fit almost perfectly on the heatsink of my LSI 9300-8i.

If your storage array is made up of HDDs, maybe a SAS expander is potentially cheaper than another HBA card. I do believe the 9300-16i is using two SAS3008 controllers, and requires extra power via a 6-pin connecter from the PSU.

Yes I put a small noctua fan on there too. That caused the card to take up two slots though which is mildly annoying.
I ordered another 8i as I became convinced that the 16i had two controller chips and eight drives isn’t a terrible limit at the end of the day.

How did you fit your fan btw? Mine was via zip ties…

I used a couple screws that fit in the fins of the heatsink.
