HGST SED SAS Drive shows not ready with sg_readcap and kernel cannot initialize it

So I’m having a problem with 8TB HGST SED drive not being to use it on my linux box. On device attach I’m getting the following messages in dmesg:

Is this disk toasted or do I need some kind of special tool for resetting it? I think it should report being a protected disk when using sg_readcap -l /dev/sg3 but instead it complains that the device is not ready?

This is a used disk from ebay and a new arrival, I just thought that someone in here might be able to tell me if I should rma this or is there some HGST specific thing that I would need to know to get this disk working.

Looks like it’s failing read operations to me. Probably a dead drive.

Yes I agree. In the same batch there was another drive that started giving smart warnings after few hours of usage, I think something might have happened to them in transit. I will rma these two.
