Layout for 16x8TB HDD pool?

Hi folks,

looking for a disk layout recommendation for this situation:

  • spinning rust
  • 16 bays (=disks) available
  • 8TB disks
  • secondary pool for bulk storage (ISOs, archive, surveillance camera streams etc)
  • importance: #1 safety #2 capacity #3 performance (does not really matter)

My first thought: 2 x 8 wide Z2.

I know Jim is very specific about raidZ layouts. So my question is: Is this idea so bad? And if yes, what are better options?

(8TB disks because I have some new ones already sitting around - so just filling up the rest)

If performance really doesn’t matter, I’d tend to agree on your choice of two eight-wide Z2.

Just remember that “performance” includes both resilver times AND “degraded performance while we wait for the resilver to complete.” :slight_smile:
