Ubuntu HWE updates

Is the 24.04.2 HWE update with a 6.11 kernel worth installing or can it cause problems? I’ve heard that it could cause issues for the 22.04 HWE if the userspace tools are not updated at the same time?

I ran into those problems you’re mentioning and now that I got upgraded from 22.04 to 24.04 I’m not moving to an HWE kernel unless I run into hardware that require it. And even then I’d think about it twice.

I’m not super enthusiastic about these subtle types of bugs that take out things like my data replication.

My tip would be don’t do it on production systems unless you have a good reason to.

I’ll chime in here that in my experience, there’s rarely a pressing need for a major kernel change in a server. But desktops are another story entirely, and largely because of GPU drivers!

If you need a major kernel upgrade, it’s really not that big an issue to make sure you update both the kernel and the OpenZFS packages at the same time, in my experience. And at least so far, if you forget, the result tends to be a minor annoyance, not anything catastrophic or dataloss causing.

But I definitely agree that you shouldn’t put yourself through it at all unless you need that HWE kernel, which–again–IME, you’re wildly unlikely to need unless this is a desktop system with a hot GPU in it.
